Hello My Little Shoebox fans, Grace here with this week's Tuesday Tutorial. Today I am going to share with you my process on how I made this family banner.
For the month of June, I was assigned to use the "Up in the Trees" collection and after studying the patterns I bit, decided to choose the graphic and solid colors versus the bolder designs so that it will work with my smaller canvas which is the chipboard pieces that I had strung a few together to make a banner. Here's the result...
and here are a few more details....Because this is a project that I intend to hang somewhere in my home, I wanted it to be very dimensional so I made sure I layered elements on top of each other and adhering them with foam adhesive to give each layer than extra "boost".
So here's the process on how I made my banner....
First, I decided on what paper to use for the background. I wanted it to be neautral so I can layer as many papers as I can without having to worry if the colors clashes with the base. I ended up choosing the "heart on the string" paper using the tan dot side. I adhered my chipboard pieces on the back side and then carefully cut out the shape from the paper using a kraft knife. I covered 8 chipboard pieces.
Next, after covering one side of the chipboard with paper, I distressed the edges.
Third step was to ink the edges. I wanted the shape to be really noticeable so I opted for a darker brown ink to cover the edges.
These chipboard pieces were from a minibook set and it only had one hole. I wanted to thread each one so I punched another hole on the opposite side of all of the pieces.
Next, I worked on my layering elements. I started off by diecutting a scallop circle shape from the "Free as a bird" paper using the red dot side. I made 8 circles.
Then I layered another paper, this time using the other side of the "Heart Strings" paper. I cut out circles from this paper, 8 in all to match my red scalloped circle cuts.
Then, I cut out the word FAMILY from my die cut machine using the "My Way" paper. I measured my letters to be 2" which fits perfectly in my circle accents.
After playing around with the layers, I decided to add one more element and this time, it's a strip that will go behind the circle accent. I used the "Birds Eye View" paper, using the hexagon yellow side. I trimmed it to an 1" in width and ran it through my paper crimper to give it more texture. I then cut the strips into 5" long strips and cut notches on each end to mimic a ribbon strip.
Afte I got all my layers, next step was to adhere them onto my base chipboard. I started with the crimped paper strip, adhering that to the center vertically. Then I layered the blue circle on the center of the scallop shape then adhering that pairing with foam adhesive on the center of the chipboard.
Then I added smaller foam adhesive to the backs of the die cut letters and then added that on top of the circle accents.
Next was to curl some die cut flowers from the Flower Die cut sheet. I used the end of a paint brush to curl the flowers to the desired size. I added a dot of glue gun to the bottom of the die cut flowers to secure the curls in place.
Then add the flowers to the two remaining chipboard pieces, 3 in each chipboard. These will serve as your end boards for the banner.
I wanted to add bling so I layered two foam adhesive on top of each other then adhered that to the rhinestone before securing it in the center of the curled flowers.
To put them all together, I threaded some blue twine through each of the holes that we've made on the top corners of the chipboard pieces. I secured the ends, on each side, by creating a loop and then tying on the back.
And finally, to keep the pieces from shifting side to side, I added some clear scotch tape on the backs of the pieces to keep them in place.
So there you have it. Here's the final project once again.....
